There really is no room for much of anything when working on the inner tie rod end. We use a Mayhew tool that slides over the tie rod and grips the inner flats, and it pops them loose with no fuss:

Just before purchasing the universal Mayhew tool stated by the JFP months earlier..

Could I ask JFP or any gentlemen finishing this DIY? Do you recommend to counterhold the rack portion in the car on removing or torqueing back the inner tie rod end to protect the sensitive steering gear?

If so, an idea of device, such as Huzar tools: Hercula Grip,is reliable to be tried ? (Products to suspension - Huzar EN).
Or any other effective economic methods in that tight space?

Gelbster, I could try that using 1-1/4" adaptor, but the OEM TRW's flat inner end is octagonal and measured diameter of exactly 31.75mm(1-1/4"), so I think metric adaptor of 32mm will be fit which is absent in that sort of set. Furthermore,I have to reinstall the inner tie rods of Miata NB1 and 2011 Mercedes GLK 220, 4Matic blueEfficiency. So I would go to the universal function.

When I torqued 50 ft-lb against to steering rack in my 2002 Miata NB with the Saginaw type steering rack set using different type of adaptors( suitable for Miata) the last year, it was scary experience without counterholding it.
Thanks.

In our car, at least early 986; Are there differences?
OEM TRW inner tie rod end flat ; 31.75mm octagonal ( so use 32mm crowfoot adaptor or universal wrench)
Any flat or stop at the rack end for counterhold: round or 22mm ?? where for safer grip.

No counter hold is required with that tool.
