Muffler Needed for '97 Boxster - Compatibility Question

Hi All, I have a 97 Boxster and there is a fairly loud rattle in the exhaust/muffler when I Rev the car or accelerate. Its hard to hear it when you in the car, but its pretty noticable when you are outside. I think (but not sure) that it could be a baffle inside the muffler that had boken away. So I believe I have 2 options.
1. get a new one "or" 2. open mine up and get the baffle re-welded?
Any thoughts, ideas? or good spare mufflers ? out there.
Or am I way off and I should be looking at something else?

Thanks

I have the one off of my 2000 S. It is very good shape what is it worth?

Muffler Compatibility

Hi thanks for your reply. Would a 2000 S muffler fit on the 97 regular car.
For some reason, I don't think so. But I may be wrong???
Any ideas Boxster experts?

What is it worth? Good question, what would you like for it?

Thanks!

Hi,

You're correct. The eGas Muffler ('00>) won't fit the non-eGas Cars without an adapter - the mounts differ. Hope this helps...

What is an e-gas and non e-gas car? Also where would I find this kind of adaptor?
Thanks!

Adaptors are risky if you ask me. I've yet to see one and my mechanic has never seen one.

Try and find a muffler off a 97-99, all of which had 2.5's.

Randall Neighbour - I agree, a perfect fitment is a lot less stress and headache. Good Call!

MNBoxster - thanks for the idea about the connectors.

JP-s-in st.louis - thanks for the offer, but I think I am going to play it safe and get one off of a 97-99 that has the correct ports for the 2.5 engine.

ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE HAVE or KNOW WHERE I CAN GET A MUFLER FOR MY '97 2.5L Boxster. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECAITED! THANKS!

Hi,

The '97-'99 Models were non-eGas, from '00 onward the Cars are eGas, while there is more to it than this alone, they basically are drive-by-wire - no direct linkage of the Driver to the Engine - the Computer runs it. While the earlier cars had conventional throttle cables and throttle bodies. Hope this helps...

Most salvage yards will sell you one for about half price of new.

I'd buy one of those modified ones off ebay before I'd buy a used one for $450 off of LA Dismantlers though.

My modded muffler sounds great! This is a good time for you to get some better sound out of your exhaust.

MN Boxster - I hear ya, drive-by-wire cars vs. cable and throttle body set up.

Randall - Ya I may look into a modified one too. Or I may decide to take the project on to open mine up.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY STEP-BY-STEP DIRECTIONS/INSTRUCTIONS OR EVEN A LINK ON HOW TO OPEN UP A 97-99 BOXSTER MUFFLER??? I THOUGHT I SAW A FOURM WITH SOME PICS OF AN OPENED UP MUFFLER.

THANKS!!!

I have the one I took off of my '99 before i stuck the 3.4L in it. You can have it for $50.
