Technical question

Hi guys I have a question on Porsche factory rebuild engines
996 3,4 engine factory rebuild in 2010 (new ZF big IMSB)
The engine does not have the common M96 engine wine, I have a 98 Boxster with a 3,4 Carerra engine in and it has the wine, before that a 97 Boxster also had the wine, and the first 996 engine before replacing had the wine. (failed due to scored cylinder no 4)

As far as I know this is from the timing chains, but does any one know if did they upgraded the valve train on the factory rebuild motors. It runs much quiet and smoother. All run Valvoline high mileage 10W40 blend. No Mobil water it cost me a new engine.

Don't know about the wine, but you should not be running 10W-40. Either 0W-40 or 5W-40

I doubt that Mobil 1 was the root cause of a blown engine

Not only is everything new & unworn, it also has the newest design chain tensioners which minimize chain slack with a preload spring. That is the only valve train upgrade.

Guys lets not get into a discussion about oil. (lots of opinions) I hate Mobil Water, It was also when I still build Subaru race and rally cars the recommended by Subaru its kak (********************) we lost bearings at an alarming rate, changed to Castrol and Valvoline blend 5-w40 and 10-w40 life was good. But to get back to the comment below ( but you should not be running 10W-40. Either 0W-40 or 5W-40) if you read your Boxster owners manual in page 108 it states 10w-40 and 5w-40 and nothing about 0-W40. It states use Synthetic or a blend but never straight Dino oil. So no Mobil water for me, but you go a head and use it.

none of them are 10W-40
Only makes sense that a thinner oil for startup is better

Its your motor, use what ever oil you want

JayG thank you for the info (according to the manual thought I did the rite thing) but I will go to Castrol or Valvoline, just not a big Mobil fan as explained before. What is the miles on your Boxster. Hey JayG talking about oil is like talking politics or religion. LOL

You got that right brother!

FWIW, you sould look at Joe Gibbs DT-40, even though it is not on the Porsche list, it was specifically formulated for the M96 engine

Maybe you can't beat the price but any 0W20 oil sure can beat the rod bearings etc.

Agree nothing like a bearing knock in the afternoon. Like to see the oil pressure at 180degF water temp.
