Name that part! (Need help ID'ing something...)
One of my P-cars has this doodad mounted under the dash, to the left of the steering wheel in no particular mounted fashion other that being wired in. Any ideas? I looked up #'s and searched -- so far, nada. :(
'99 Boxster Please see pic -- barcode lists SN:L3120205699 / IMEI:358696046774918 http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1440006704.jpg |
This is what the IMEI number pulls back to:
https://www.u-blox.com/en/product/leon-g1 My guess from the product info is that it's a tracker, possibly installed if the car was previously on a buy-here-pay-here lot or with a bad credit lender. |
name that part
Google:
xpyleong100 Looks like some kind of aftermarket tracking device. One post I found talked about an aftermarket keyless remote starter. Good luck! |
Thanks guys, excellent leads! Think I thought I saw something about a remote someplace when switching number around. And the dealer was mighty sketchy come to think of it, so maybe she was under surveillance! I'll keep digging to decide whether it's gotta go or not.

Unplug it and see what happens!

You can never be sure nowadays, who knows, what if that module is allowing this scam dealership to see your every move, only to rob you of your car and belongings??
IMEI means it is wirelessly communicating somehow (I think). I would unplug battery, unplug that connector or drive into a faraday cage. |
some of those things connect to the ignition and if disconnected the car will not start
others are like Lojack and can get you a discount on insurance |
this is a GPS tracking device.
usually installed by the "by here pay here" dealers. that specific device is made by Enfora, and sold by many GPS companies. here is just few of them: Enfora MT-GI- Position Logic - GPS Device Library https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlcxuFN3LSM |
That's what I'm after -- thanks for he specifics Meir!

Something like this would really p... me off! Not only the invasion of privacy, which somehow seems to be of no concern lately, but also that someone hacked into my wiring.1 :troll: Something to add to look out for on a PPI!

If the car is being finenced, the car belong to the finance company until it is fully paid. The "driver" of the car has signed a disclosure conforming he is aware that a tracking device is installed in the car, and it is required in order to outhorize the loan. In other words, no GPS, no finance = no car. Now. If Jeramy fully payed for the car and he owns it, the device is probably not active and nobody is watching him. If he is still under finance and paying on time, still nobody is watching him. If he is not making his payments ( sorry Jeramy. It's just to make a point) and he is disregarding the finance company phone calls, then yes, someone is watching him, and the repo guy is on its way. Once again. I was just making a point, and I'm sure J is on time with his payments. :;) |
on the bright side, it could lower your insurance cost with a tracking device

I think the point here is that they are only active and in cars that are financed, therefore not your property. The property owner has every right to put a tracker in their property and come to retrieve it if the borrower is in default.
I guess the real question is "does Jeremy own the car?" |
Sorry PW I know what you are saying, but this has become an accepted norm. Now everything is getting tracking systems. Think about this. We can trust a car salesman right? What's to stop someone tracking your hot wife that goes in to pick up a car? Like I said I understand. I have no issue with one being installed into a convicted drunk driver car. There is a purpose and then they are removed. This one just moves to the next seller? No Thanks.

A good hacker can track you by your phone, too.
Some apps, search engines and service providers are already doing so. Ok, most are. The ads on this site are trying to sell me things that I just looked at or searched for. |
