So does anyone on this forum know...

how to set the valve timing on a 3 chain engine? I've done enough searching to *think* i know, but that's a long way actually from knowing from someone who has been there. Any help would be appreciated.

This is not something I can explain easily. You will need the engine repair section from a 2005 to 2008 shop manual. I purchased from ebay. The procedures listed as 1999 to 2004 manual do not show the engine assembly for a three chain motor. You will need a cam retaining tool and a vario cam tightening tool.

Thanks for the excellent advice. I have the manual and am on my way.

No, the cam timing section is the OEM service manual runs several pages, requires specific tooling, and a working knowledge of the M96/97 engine assembly. Not hard, but it is not for someone that does not like to follow specific directions........

JFP, should I be able to douwnload this from the Porsche website?

I've already downloaded certain parts of the 986 manual. I don't recall different instructions for the 2003/2004 3 chain timing.

JFP I was able to download the sections from the Porsche website and you are correct, they are very specific and need to be followed carefully.
