I have 987 dampers on the front of my 86
I use 997s uprights because I wanted the bigger caliper bolt spacing to allow fitment of 6 pot brakes.
The damper is no taller.
Bilstein confirmed for me that the valving was within a few percent of each other....so the 987 dampers won't be too hard on the slightly lighter 986.

One thing to watch if you have an early car is the abs sensors in the 9x7 won't be compatible.
They were for my 2002 S but didn't work in a friend's early 2.5
