Do you mean the Check Engine Light came on?

These come on for a variety of reasons... oil cap or fuel cap is not on tight is one of the reasons, but it can also be oxygen sensor related or Mass Air Fuel sensor related as well, not to mention a bunch of other stuff.

You need to get it to someone with a code reader to determine what it is. As long as it's not blinking, you can drive the car but your fuel economy may not be good and you may have a rough idle as the computer tries to compensate for whatever is not working right.
