5 Spd tranny clicking sound in first gear?

I had my tranny rebuilt earlier this year and recently noticed a clicking sound under acceleration in first gear only. I put it in neutral and applied some gas to look for the same noise but did not get it. It only happens under acceleration in first gear. Is this normal to have a little but of noise or not? It is hard to hear over the engine noise, but if you look for it, it is there.

There should be no clicking sound coming from the tranny.
Check your drive shaft boots to make sure they're not torn.
When torn they can make that clicking sound.

When mine did this I freaked and replaced the tranny with one from a salvage yard. My mechanic opened it up before he junked it and said the 1st gear had nicks in it from a previous owner's bad shifting habits.

It would be cheaper if it was a drive shaft boot, although not "cheap" in most people's books. Those are labor intensive to replace.

if it were a drive shaft boot, it would happen in more than just first gear.

questions to help the diagnosis:

is the clicking speed sensitive (does it get faster with the car)?

does it happen when you cruise, accelerate, or decelerate?

does it go away when you apply the brakes while in 1st?

about how fast is the click? like a helicopter, or like a ten speed bike?

Sorry to revive a dead thread, but I am having this exact problem and it gets a bit louder every day. My clicking is only in first. it is sensitive to speed...being that it speeds up along with acceleration. its far louder than the engine, but there are no driveability problems yet (?) so to the point, what should I check and is there any hope for me not having to replace the trans? any insight is MUCH appreciated as its about to be moved to Texas from DC and I dont want it to go anywhere in between.

Check the CV joints/boots first. If they are in good working order and not the source of the click then do your best to verify that its in the tranmission.

If it is the tranny, most of time its cheaper to replace it with a salvage tranny ($400-$500) than rebuilding the one you have.
