Battery/alarm problem

:confused:I am trying to replace the battery on my 986. When I disconnect the negative lead, after about 5 seconds, the alarm sounds for 30 seconds (hell, that thing's loud!). It continues to sound even if I disconnect the positive. I can't find any reference to this anywhere. Is it possible to do something to prevent the alarm activating when changing the battery, or am I just going to have to deafen myself and annoy the neighbours?

someone probably installed an aftermarket alarm in your car. the OEM alarm system is connected to a horn located next to the battery, and doesn't have any alternative power source.

If you can't silence the alarm then put a battery charger on the battery leads and the car should not notice that the battery is out of the car.

This is a very bad idea, most chargers are high current (amperage) out put, and there would be no battery to absorb the current. You could do some serious damage.

There are maintainers that have low current settings specifically for doing this, but not all do............

Mine has a 2amp setting. That is what has been used for years and many cars. Didn't think about the cheaper versions of chargers.

Nice job JFP.

Found out that before removing battery leads, put key in ignition and turn to position 1. It works. New battery installed in perfect peace.

I had similar issues when changing my battery but I think it's only the European Boxster's that require the ignition turned to position 1 (auxiliary battery back up)

It's pretty loud with your head under there isn't it!
