Zimmerman coated rotors - any prep?

Do these rotors need any prep before instaling them? Does the coating need to be scuffed off the actual rotor surfaces, or will it wear off normally during usage?.

Coating will wear off when you brake...

If they didn't arrive painted, consider painting the rotor hats before installation.

Why paint the hats?

Something you don't see in Miami - Rust.

I thought the point of buying rotors with coated hats and edges was that they would not need to be painted.

If you are fussy about your car looks, a painted rotor hat looks way cooler behind a detailed wheel, it also protects against rust which I now know happens plenty in places other than NY like Florida beach areas.

Coating will wear off in a year (speaking from experience) from heat on the rotors, only the OEM rotor hat don't rust because it's painted.

Yep, they're built in the same factory as Casey Anthony's IMS bearings...

Installed my Zimmerman rotors about 5 years ago. they came with the hats pianted a glossy black. I didn't care for that look and questioned them. they said that paint woul last a long time with no rust. here it is 5 years later and they still look as good as the day I instaed them.

I have had them for a year now, no rust and no prep. they are a very good quality product in my humble opinion. You are talking about the Z- coated ones i presume.
I have the drilled ones , they look great and work just as well.

Appleguy 04-29-2012 09:16 AM

I have the Zimmerman drilled rotors. I painted all of the hats silver with high temp paint because the rears were not available coated and I wanted them to match.

And, yes, the coating will be scuffed off of the rotor surface on your first braking.

Cheers

Hi, they make the rears Z coated and drilled as well, got mine off Pelican parts

Its always a good practice to do a quick wipe down of the rotor surface with brake cleaner prior to installation.

jsceash 04-30-2012 05:36 PM

I've had the Zimmerman drilled and slotted rotors for two years the hats are still as silver as they were when installed. No rust. My guess is they will wear out before they rust.
