I'm definitely keeping the air box in there. I installed a piece of foam into the tube before the MAF sensor, temporarily, to reduce the inside diameter of it. The car now idle's rock steady. And I've driven it 6 short drives with no CEL. So far I'm thrilled.

I also checked the systems status, and all but 2nd air are pass, which is enough to get me through a smog check here. I don't know why it shows fail on 2nd air, I hear the thing run every cold start for about a minute.
