These photos should help in removing the intake grill so you can get access to your snorkel.

I've been attempting this a few times lately, and I think this actually helped my understanding quite a bit. My car's older (97), so it doesn't have the joined lower vanes like the unit pictured, but I imagine it'll work out the same way. I've been having trouble getting the body colored piece out, but if I can push the vanes inward to separate them from those tabs, then I think it'll be easier to get the painted section off, kind of backwards from what's pictured. I'm going to have to attempt this again soon.
