DME swap 986 to 996

Will a DME #996.618.601.04 from a 986 Boxster work in a 996 that used the same DME part #? Will the DME need to be re-programed?

Thanks. John

Yes and yes. Make sure you get the necessary programming codes from the seller or at least the VIN of the donor car so a dealer can provide them.

right; you need the VIN & proof of ownership from the donor car. with that information, a dealer can provide you with the immobilization codes for the donor. this information is required when re-flashing the ECU with the new program.

also, when you re-program, consider using the RoW program instead of the U.S.A. program. it does a few things:

1. eliminate clutch start switch; can start car w/ clutch out
2. eliminate second set of O2 sensors
3. eliminste secondary air injection

from an emissions standpoint, the car will still pass in the U.S., but will have a MUCH better chance of never failing.

when you decide to get the new program, board member tholyoak can do the ECU flash for you for a very attractive price.

Thanks guys. I have the VIN as the donor is a parts car in my garage. A friend was quoted $5,000.00 for the DME by a Porsche dealer in CO so I have made him very happy. The best price he found online was $2,500 new.
