Side Intake Mesh ?

1 Attachment(s)
I'm looking for advice regarding what size mesh in should use on my side air intakes ? My goal is to remove the factory "louvers", and create a simpler more stylish look . Any thoughts ?

JD,

No help on the mesh, sorry.

What's the deal with those openings? They look as if there's more going on than just the OE louvers being replaced.

Good eye. Basically, the the entire oem insert has been removed and replaced with just mesh . Here's another perspective on what I'm considering doing .

As you might expect, this is how things currently look .

I like the mesh with the painted insert left installed. The depth is appealing to me.

Have you thought about black mesh versus yellow mesh?

Definitely black mesh, not yellow . Here's another option. It's a turbo style intake designed to fit the 986 .

ddb 06-22-2011 03:55 PM

I believe I like the split opening on the Turbo because the opening is taller. On your 986 I like the OE opening with the black mesh to pick up on those black wheels.

BTW, are your wheels flat (or semi-flat black) or do they have more gloss to them than appears in the pic?

I've often thought about having the spokes on my wheels painted black. Thus far I've been too lazy to do it.

They're gloss black .

Dear Mr. Dan Gerous, I like the smooth transition into the nostrils (as opposed to the 'gills' on the newer Boxsters). It would seem that you would need a whole new rear quarter panel with this modification or is there another way to 'french' in the opening?

I am not personally fond of black painted wheels as it makes them hard to see and detail is lost, at least to these tired old eyes. Otherwise car looks great. Party ON!

Same quarter panels, they plug right in .

The turbo look is nice, where can one get a set of those?

I was referring to the white and yellow examples in the first couple of posts as I see no seam. The split turbo examples look like they would plug right in.

The yellow and white vehicles have had the oem inserts completely removed, and replaced with just mesh .

but on the stock piece is there that much lip? it seems that rear quarter in those pics is from a wide-body kit and designed with a deeper lip. I could be wrong though.

The Radium King 06-24-2011 08:35 AM

here's an image of a stock fender without the vent:

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k2/grizzly_011/DSC00831.jpg

so, there's obviously some bodywork going on with those white/yellow cars. more likely, those look like aftermarket widebody fenders.

Overdrive 06-24-2011 08:54 AM

Well, those are Gemballas, so the wide body speculation would be correct. Personally, I don't like that look all that much, but the ones that still contain an insert with a different style or mesh look good to me. That turbo-style one is really nice, it actually blends with the car's basic look.

Interesting point. So far as I know, the Gemballa kit retains all of the oem parts (except the hood), to include the fenders . I was under the impression, that if you remove the insert portion of the side intake, the remaining channel extends further inward than the photo RK has posted . In any case, it seems that the turbo style intakes win out .

There's one more style that I forgot to mention; the Techart intakes . Yes, no, maybe ?

And another .

there's also these guys - stock-ish but more aggressive:

and these guys - way aggressive:

Lobo1186 06-24-2011 09:29 AM

I think if it were up to me and I wanted to go with another vane setup, I would go with that turbo one or the charactre one. the techart ones are kinda ok.
