944 w / no oil pressure
 

sorry for posting here, but someone may know the answer.

Today, I helped a friend to install the engine on a 944, the reason for removal was a spun rod bearing, we started the engine for a few seconds but the low oil pressure light remained on, we removed the small inspection plugs on the head and removed the oil filter and both were dry.

We tried to prime the pump trough the filter housing but didn't got any pressure, when my friend replaced the rod bearings he meassured the gears on the pump and they were within specs.

Any ideas..?

Did you check the oil pressure sending unit?

The oil pressure sending unit is new, since the connectors got broken during engine installation we may have cross connected them.

However, I believe that this will only keep the oil pressure light on, and we confirmed that we didn't have any pressure at all, through the inspection plugs at the head and also when we removed the oil filter it was bone dry... :-(

Could a malfunctioning Oil Pressure relief valve? like mentioned on the previous post (thanks..!) be the cause to keep the oil from reaching the filter?

Is the oil pressure relief and the oil pressure sending unit the same component?

No they are different units. There is an updated oil pressure relief valve for 944s up to 86 and for 87 and later. They run $450+. Try searching on 944online.com for parts and their forum is a good place for information.

Check to make sure the front crank bolt is at 150ft. lbs. The oil pump is a friction drive. Oil pickup tube could also be cracked or not sealed correctly.
