Bore Scoring - Thoughts?
I had a PPI done on a 987.1 2006 Cayman S today, and this is what the bore scope showed on cylinder #6. To me it looks like pretty deep scoring, so I think I'll pass on this car. Any thoughts on this, do you agree with my decision?
They also looked at Cylinder #3, and it looked fine. They didn't look at any other cylinders, but why would you?
It's disappointing, the rest of the car looks to be in excellent shape! 64K on it, and priced slightly under the market rate. It had all the options that I wanted, so I was excited to find it locally to me. Guess I'll keep looking!

Interesting to see this in a 3.4. As the bores get bigger, the more frequently one sees this problem it seems. The 3.6 has it more often while it's relatively rare in the 3.2. Glad you had the foresight to have the scope done!

No doubt, that was a good decision. Those scores look pretty deep. What made you think it`s worthwhile to check on such a low mileage car? Just curios.

Nothing jumped out at me that the car might have a problem, the wisdom is to always get a PPI on a Porsche. In this case, it was wise!

Definitely. It`s incredible how easily you can run into something like this and waste a lot of money. This car is basically a roller... :ah: And probably the owner wasn`t even aware.

You should post the VIN incase someone else on the forum looks to buy it and is checking on info for it.

He wasn't aware. I believe that because he was really cool with me getting the PPI.

I'm not going to post the VIN, but it's a silver 2006 Cayman S for sale in Seattle. It's the only one currently on the market.

It's common enough from what I've read that I thought it was worth the $200 to have the Porsche specialist check it out. I'm glad I did!

I had an '07 987CS with the 3.4 engine and was using a quart of oil between 800-1000 miles, the compression was even and I believe that the oil consumption was caused by a scored cylinder.
Saved money for a couple of years to build a 3.8 engine with the LN Nickies (even attended the Flat6 class), but before I could rebuild the engine a lady ran a red light changing my plans... (the car had 105k on the clock)
If I was on the same position, I would do it all over again, the 987 chassis is awesome..

Bore scoring is a growing concern for these engines per Jake Raby . He believes and it makes common sense that a large contributor is leaking fuel injectors . Fuel tends to puddle in the cylinders because they are horizontal . Add to that in some cases less than stellar engine oil being used . Basically setting up dry cold start ups . Rinse/repeat that cycle X amount of times equals bore scoring .
I have watched his videos and have seen with my own eyes the bore scoring he talks about . I think but don't know that the issue is more pronounced in the DFI engines . Bore scoring is just another issue to be aware of , just like the IMS it could happen maybe even might happen but not enough of an issue to not enjoy the cars . Just my opinion .
