has anyone tried this exhaust mod?
I went to a local exhaust shop to ask them to do the pedro sports exhaust on my 03 S, but they refused... they seemed to think that it is "chickent scratch" and beneath their skills. That's the second shop that has refused to do it for me. Instead they offered to eliminate the stock muffler (just the rear last part) and install two big stainess pipes (that are bent and come out thorugh the center - and add some tips). Has anyone tried this yet? Any thoughts?

You will not only need earplugs, but the noise will give you brain damage too....
At least you'll save money on a Bose upgrade ! Use the search function, sit back for a few hours and read all about it. |
Eliminating muffler
I just did this in order to lose some weight and here are the results. First off you lose apx. 30 lbs., it is loud with the straight pipes and the drone at 2500 is unbearable to me, but not hopeless. I bought a set of 2" x 8" motorcycle baffles and fiberglass wrap, about 25.00 total on ebay. With just the baffle the drone is just about as bad as straight pipes, but if you wrap the baffle with the fiberglass the drone goes away. I am primarily using the car as a track car this summer and will be running the straight pipes, but I did want to be able to use it on a few occasions and the baffles and fiberglass has worked out. I don't know if i would recommend it for strictly a street car, my purpose was mainly to lose weight and that worked out. Hope this helps. Bill, Pgh, PA

Thank you both for the inputs... don't think I'm going to do it.

I'd keep looking for a shop to handle the bypass modification. I have one on my Box S, modified by Oettle http://www.oettle.org/home.html . The modified muffler, along with Fabspeed bypass pipes, creates a great sounding exhaust with no resonance or drone.

I DO NOT suggest straight pipes on anyone unless this is a track only car.
If you want power and good sound without losing driveability IMO the best option is fabspeed 986 Boxster MAXFLO 2ndary Catbypass Pipes. I have installed these and LOVE how they sound accompanied with the Stock exhaust. Best exhaust bang for the buck |
