Renegade Hybrids emailed me yesterday to let me know they're now testing a LS7 in a boxster... 600 hp!

Folks, we'll be able to shoehorn a corvette motor in a boxster roller soon enough :)

You purists don't need to comment on how this bastardizes the car or brand or whatever. I couldn't care less myself. I just want a clear upgrade path when my 2.5 goes kaput and I want a far more reliable motor with gobs of HP at a smaller price tag than a Porsche replacement motor.

but I agree this is a great option. but I might miss that porsche sound. Maybe do this LS7 for the 986 and get a cayman R with a 7400 RPM redline :rolleyes:

I've driven my 2000S back to back with my buddy's '10 Carrera 4S. 250 bhp and 385 bHP respectively.

With complete honesty, I can say that on real roads with stop lights and traffic there isn't much difference. Yes, on ramps are pretty amazing in the C4S and just entertaining in my car, but shortly your on the highway and have to keep to the speed limits (more or less) and the extra power is unused again. I'm not saying the Boxster feels as powerful as the C4S, clearly when you get into it, the C4S is really scary fast. But I am saying that 95% of the time, there is no benefit to having the extra power, for me.

I think at 250 hp, the returns of more power start diminishing pretty quickly.

I have a C6 Corvette and a recently acquired 2000 S and the Boxster would be a hell of a car with an LS2/3. Don't know how they'd figure out the transmission in such a package but I'd be interested if somebody made a full kit.

I believe there are several people that make full kits, just goggle it.

I have no problem with the V8 concept, but wish it had a 180 degree crank, so it didn't sound like a Korvet or a Nascar...that just isn't a pleasant sound unless you're into those types :D

Funny thing, I just spent the weekend with Scott Mann from Renegade Hybrids doing a DE instructor training course. He said the 996 V8 has been bulletproof and there is a 2001 Box S roller sitting in his shop right now getting ready for a 430 HP LS3 motor. Yes this can be done now! :D

I have to think it may be a long shot, Randall, and maybe too long of a shot for the Year Ones. My only reason for saying this is that issue of frame reinforcement that happened on every car after the first model year. If the car can handle the weight and torque without breaking pieces and/or pretzeling itself...then I might give it more than a second thought... :o

You could certainly transform a 97 to V8 power but a 1st gen Box is such a perfect 2.5 spec car. If you want to go V8 find a dead Box S. There are plenty around and they already have:
Bigger brakes
6 Speed
3 radiators
bigger radiator hoses
Heavier duty axles & rear hubs
Better stock exhaust and suspension

Beefed up suspension mounting points beginning with MY 98. Running 18" wheels is not recommended by Porsche on MY 97 Boxsters. For that matter 430 HP Chevy V8 power is probably not recommended by Porsche either. :p

Good to know! The chevy V8 is nice, but not the "best" engine for the Boxster.

97s are usually not chosen for spec boxsters for the very same reason... Supposedly weak subframe issues.

I'm all for modding cars. But personally, in a car like the Box, I'd far rather have a zing, revvier smaller capacity engine with lots of top end howl. The sound and power delivery of a big Chevy V8, while very attractive in some cars, is just not what I'd ever want in a Boxster. Something that performed like a BMW M Power straight-six (not an option due to layout, obviously) would be very interesting. But I'd have to say no thanks to a Chevy V8.

It would be especially interesting to hear about complexity and cost to make the motor mounts, cutting the frame (?) and all the little thingies that drive up the cost.

As I mentioned in the other thread; I think these are the same A8 engines that Spyker is using. I talked to the owner of Spyker last year (still the owner of Saab until the Chinese buy him out) and they are using the Audi engine because it is virtually bullet proof and can easily be tuned.
Drop the same engine in a Boxster and I'm sure it will keep up with a Spyker. Hence the interest.
