Boxster Performance Engine Options

Hey!

What are the options for a high performance Boxster with an engine conversion? Is there a tuner for Porsche engines with custom grind camshafts installed in Boxsters? What are the prices of conversions, engine build-ups?

Can a 3.2 be tuned to make 100 horsepower per liter?

Thanks!
Jamie

I would suggest doing a search here as much of what you ask has been asked and answered before.

Re" your last question, if you are talking normally aspirated, I would say that is a big fat no!

100 Hp per liter is the key to a true exotic Sports Car like the Boxster.

They should have a Boxster RS with 320HP .............that would be awesome.

It's possible to get 100hp/liter on a the flat 6 if you have the dough to do it. The 3.6 liter in the GT3 exceeds 100hp/liter with 380 factory hp. By the time you have that much hp with a 3.2L though...you could probably just buy a basic 3.6L with 320 hp. It's simply not worth it. You can attain 290-300hp with the right parts however for far less money.

I see tuning as intake, exhaust etc., hence the answer that I gave. I ruled out cams head work etc.

Yeah I hear ya...it would take some extreme tuning, work, and money but 320hp could be milked out of the 3.2L. With say Dansk headers, cats, exhaust, intake work, and extensive dyno work with an expert tweeking the ECU 290-300hp is about the limit with the bolt-on mods.

GT3 engine

Ahhhhh.....now I understand the mystique of the GT3. Read a little about it on the internet. THAT is the engine I want in a Boxster.

So.....Can someone race prep a 3.6 to run in the upper stratosphere of RPM and fit in a Boxster? How about OBDII emission legal too?

Who are the tuners that get 450 horsepower out of a naturally aspirated race 3.6?

Thanks!
Jamie

lol..no those 450hp engines aren't OBD compliant. The 3.2L with basic bolt-ons can't even pass emmisions.

At the wheels or the crank?

It is really not that hard to get 100hp per liter. What some people forget is that almost every car that has hit that achievement is getting measured at the crank just like the GT3 and pretty much every Honda type R since at least 2000.

Yes.. He is presented and accounted for :-)

We use the 3.2 base to go to 3.4,3.5 and 3.6 liters. 340HP from our 3.2>3.6 combination thus far.

I am assembling a 3.6 based FSI modified 3.8 liter X 51 engine now. Detuned this one has a target of 425HP at the flywheel.

Its actually not much more than a stock updated rebuild using our processes and components. Read more about it in the next issue of Excellence Magazine in the "Tech Forum".. The article features our work of innovative-ly redesigning the M96 engine to be something it never was from the factory.

The new GT3 is actually about 415hp as advertised.

A 3.6 in a Boxster is a lot of fun and not that expensive to do.

What I'm doing

I wanted 100 hp per liter too, so went ahead and started looking at some things and I found that with a good exhaust, a quality intake and some software you could attain this goal. My car dynoed at 231 hp and 210 ft/lbs of torque at the wheels, so I should, in theory (you can't really race a sheet of paper), get what I want out of this car.:)

Your options are unlimited

or should I say limited only by your bank account.

If you haven't already read this it summarizes everything I've been able to learn about making a Boxster engine more powerful. The caution is that you shouldn't expect big results for little mods, you should read every claim with a great deal of skepticism, and you should plan a route that makes sense long term...doing things in an order that builds benefit on benefit and only finally chipping...for example.

There are those who think the driver's skill is the limiting factor and that should be improved through driver's schools as the first item tackled. After all, even the least powerful Boxster engine at 201HP is so much more powerful than a stock Miata, a base Solstice, a 914, a 356, a 912, a TR6, an MR6, etc.
