Tranny and service problems

A few weeks ago I purchased a 2003 Boxtser S and I love it!!! However I am having a couple issues, as expected, and I hoped to find some answers here on the forum.

The first issue to address is a gear oil leak. I have a 6 speed and it appears I am leaking oil where the shift lever enters the transmission. It seems loose and looks as though it will flex when I shift causing oil to leak. Is this a common problem with these cars and do I have to pull the tranny and open the case to repair this??? Ouch if so.

The second issue is a fault code for the secondary air valve (selonoid). This should be an easy repair but help me answer one foolish question. The 2003 boxster has the factory installed rear glass window. How do you put the top in service mode in order to access the engine? Is Porsche foolish enough to add a factory part that would prevent easy acces to the engine or am I the fool?

Where the shifter system enters the trans, there is a shaft that passes thru the tailhouse case. If that is what you are refering to, it is not an uncommon problem, but is not an easy fix either. The shaft rides on a bronze bushing that unfortunately is pressed into the housing as a blank, and then machined in place. As the result, it is not sold by itself, the rear case assembly needs to be replaced, which means pulling the gear box............

Thank you, although it is the bad news I hoped not to hear. I suspected that after observing the location of the leak and looking at the shop manuals, I just hoped otherwise. As far as gettingthe top into service mode, it just took a little patience to find the exact sweet spot the window will clear the rollbars. Thanks a lot for the help.

The rear case assembly? I had a brief look at Pelican and don't see it.
where can it be sourced and how much? :eek:

Basically, you are replacing the tranmission section in the photo where the mechanic's hand are; this requires total disassembly of the gear box. It is also a good time to do any other needed trans work (syncros, seals, etc.), or to add a limited slip unit............an it is not a cheap repair...........

I am having the same issue with my 03 986S and the car is in the shop waiting for the new case to arrive. Cost of the new case is around $630.00. Labor is also around $600.00. Not a cheap repair.

Wow, Tranny service problem. That really takes me back. One St Patrick's Day I got really wasted. My frat brothers and I went to this new bar. I picked up what I thought was the hottest chick in the place. But, when we ---- Oh, wait. You're talking about a transmission problem. Sorry. Never mind.
