Hardtop storage
 

My new Boxster S comes with a hardtop which is great, however I live in an apartment in Manahattan so no space to store it.

I will probably rent a mini-storage unit for it, but as I have not yet collected the car does anyone know whether the hardtop standing upright on a hardtop stand would fit into a 4 x 4 x 4 space?

I believe that it will fit in that size space, but I'm at work and my hardtop is at home, so I can't measure and be entirely sure. I'll measure it tonight. You might also want to pick up the hardtop cover for it. I picked up a used one off of eBay for under $50. It covers the top entirely and has a cool full color porsche logo on it.

I'm actually building a wall mount rack for mine. That way it's up off of the floor and it shows off the Porsche logo...kinda like fine art!

I just picked up the factory hardtop rack that mounts to the wall. It's a nice piece built to Porsche specs and the hardtop fits perfectly. You can pick them up for about $200 and I've even seen them installed on ceilings.

Where did you get your wall rack from? Heck, for $200, I'd rather buy one than go to the trouble of making one. It would free up time for something else!

From the dealership. Actually, I think it was $210. I just checked the factory website and couldn't find it but you can check your factory manual. It may have it there, but I know for sure the dealers can get them for you. They ordered mine and they had it there in two days.

Do you intend to use it often? One problem with the hardtop is that if you hardly ever use it, the color of the top will eventually differ from the body. It will be quite aweful when that happens and you intend to put it on.

The new softop comes with rear glass window and is almost as good as any hardtop. So you may want to save some money on that hardtop option if you don't intend to use it that often....

my friend actually made this for me and it is hanging in my garage wall. it works like a charm and sturdy as heck. the cost was $0. he used some old aluminum pipes that was laying around that was originally for some canopy.

Got any pics of it without the hardtop hanging on it?

I too have a hard top and it's laying on the garage floor being in the way. Do you have pictures describing what your neighbor did with the pipes for it hold the top? I've been trying to figure out a way without spending several hundred for a push cart and a hard top cover.

I read somewhere that the Miata's rolling hardtop storage cart works for the Boxster also. I don't know this for a fact but some of you might want to check into it as it is much cheaper than Porsche's version.

how my friend made my rack...
 

my camera broke so i cant take any pics but i will try to explain what he did.

1 he used a (about 3/4 in diameter) aluminum pipe or a post. really light.
2 he cut it into 2 posts, one on the top, longer, shorter one on the bottem.
3 the installed a lower post on the wall using a bracket(4, 2 on each post).
he spaced it out about
inch from the wall so that the lower part of the hardtop can rest on it.
this is where pretty much all of its weight is stressed on.
4 he then installed the 2nd post, on the top, using the same method.
(my neice, who weighs about 60 pounds was hanging on it and it didnt break)
5 important!!! drilled 2 holes on the upper post so that the tightening handle
of the hardtop could be inserted and turned in order to lock it into the post.
remember the hole is not a circle now, he had to make it bit of an oval shape
in order for it to insert and to lock it in.

he did a lot of measuring so i dont know if it is gonna turn out the same.


the reason why he made this? i use to have it on the wall hanging.
got a big hook installled on the wall, and i took a strap, wrapped the
hardtop and just hung it there. never had any problems but it wasnt the
prettiest thing.
