cracked coil pack
I am changing out the plugs and tube 0-rings 57k and as i am cleaning parts i notice that the coil packs have some small cracks in them. I haven't had any issues with codes or lack of performance.
I am planning on reinstalling them and running the car in the spring. would it be safe to say that i will be needing to replace these at some point? Luckily these are nowhere as expensive as the ones for my old ass es300. |
You will eventually be replacing them.
Question is, do you want to pick the time and place, or have the angry Porsche Gods do it to you? At the very least I would have them on hand. But if the car fails some distance from your home, the tow alone could exceed the cost of replacement, which of course you'd still have to do as well. Cheers! |
that's what i was thinking. i am sure at some point i'll need to replace them. $250 for all 6 isn't too bad.

I dove around for over a year with cracked coil packs. I was told that you only really have to worry about them if they get wet. I don't know how sound that advice was. I figured that it was an easy fix so I just replaced them all.
|
You'll wind up swapping em sooner or later. If you can guarantee the car won't get wet, I suppose you could put it off until later, but were it me, I'd just replace all of them and have some peace of mind.

the car isn't driven in the rain and i don't really get the motor wet, but i may do it next winter.

After 30K the OE coil packs will generally have a couple of cracks.. Generally these do not effect their performance.
When I perform a 60K service I replace all the coil packs, cracked or not |
i will keep that in mind. Is there special lube that i need to use to grease the o-rings on the spark plug tubes?

The real enemy of the coil packs is...
... water.
If you see any minor cracks, it's usually just in the plastic case. What I do is put a bit of epoxy resin in the cracks to seal them up. Mine are still OEMs with almost 200K miles on them and a bit of epoxy every now and again. Happy Boxstering, Pedro |
