Bad Misfire!

i own a 986 and yesterday whilst driving on the freeway it started misfiring badly, i couldnt leave it in top gear as the revs died down drastically and luckily made it to my house. the problem is that the local garage is closed for another week
any idea what it could be?
i had a very similar problem on my vw a while ago and it happened to be a coil, so im hoping it would be something similar, not too costly!
