Please help on some ECU questions!

Hello,

My name is John, and my boss just bought a 2001 Boxster S. He asked me to find a ECU chip that would work w/ his car to boost the horsepower or smoothness. I found a unichip on unichip's site...is that the best option? thank you all very much

John

Welcome John. Unfortunately the chips out there won't really yield any horsepower gains without also changing the intake and/or headers. GIAC (a very reputable tuning company) has dynos that show that its chip, plus an EVO air intake will yield about 18-20 hp's at the wheels I believe. Might want to look towards that route.
However, it's not cheap... we're talking $1500 for 20 hp's.

Good luck!

Hi John,
I agree with Jwocky.
There's been quite a bit of discussion on this board about chip mods. I too asked the question. The concensus appears to be that a chip mod by itself is not worth the outlay because the performance improvements are minimal.
The greatest improvement you are likely to see is swapping the engine for a 3.4 or 3.6L from a 996. that's a big job. Or look for a turbo upgrade.

Ultimately it is your boss's decision, but I decided I would save the pennies for the next Boxster once this one is paid off......
