Oil change intervals?
when i bought my boxster, it had JUST turned 30k miles and they had done an oil change on it... well, i've now since put 6500 miles on it and was double checking my maintenance info because i had thought i read 7500 miles between changes... well i get online and find that it's 15,000 between oil changes?! is that right?! the car is pre-certified and i want to take teh best care of it (without doing unnecessary things) and of course want my warranty to be in tact... so 15k miles between changes is correct?

Change once per year or between 7,500-10,000 miles. Whichever comes first.
Mobil One 0W40. |
Oil Changes
If you are just putzing around town with it then you should be able to get away with 7500-10000. However, if you are taking it to the track or pushing it alot, then 5000.

Ohh, and for me. 7500, or once a year, what ever is first. No M1 for me, not even in my beater. There are better oils for less money or equal dollars out there. Elf/Total for the Porsche. |

It is now up to 20,000 miles with the first generation 987. This is called extended drain intervals. You can read about it here. Other car companies are doing this as well.
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php I am from the old school where it was about 6,000 miles. But I go over it. Engines have improved over the years. Other cars hold about 4 to 5 quarts and use normal oil. The Boxster holds almost 10 quarts and uses synthetic. So I go it out of my mind and change the oil every 15,000 miles, if it needs it or not. I do not do anything fancy with the car - it is my daily driver and only car. I have a 1997 that I have owned for 9 years with 67,000 miles. |
Porsche's official oil change interval per the owners manual and the Bentley's service manual is 15,000 miles. It's the same on my BMW as well.
That being said, for a daily driver I would also be more comfortable with a 7,500 to 10,000 mile interval. I only do about 2,000 miles a year on mine so it's a not an issue for me. I change my oil once a year. But now that I've started doing DE events I guess I will be changing it more than once a year. |
For the 2008 Boxster, Porsche lowered the interval to 12,000 miles (for the 911 too). I find this interesting.
Still 9-10 quarts of oil. Still synthetic oil. Still Mobil 1 .....still interesting. |
with 10 quarts in circulation there is a lot of dilution of contaminants.
15,000 miles on Mobil one is acceptable as long as it is done within one year. Annual changes are required if less than 15,000 miles withing the year.. |
For 2008 it was raised to 24,000 miles.

Here's one place that supports the non-3000 mile oil change: http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/oil-life.html I also don't use M1, but not for any technical reasons -- I run Motul 8100 Xcess 5W-40 -- when the car's out of warranty, I may go with Redline as bmussatti does. Regards, paul... |
