Is the rear main seal problem...

engine specific? Meaning: more common in 2.5, 2.7 or 3.2.. or production years..

I read one statement where a tech said it was an out-of-round crankshaft vs. simply a bad seal itself.

Any thoughts?

All engine variants, all years, all mileages

If you get a real bad casting then you're in for multiple replacements, although PCA do seem to replace engines after a while, whereas the UK just have to keep going with new seals (and a 2 yr warranty :( )

A porsche mechanic told me it was not a rear main seal at fault in the older boxsters... this was secondary. The primary cause was the crankshaft, which fouled out the RMS.
