Box S Oil change
Ok we're changing the box S oil this week. I did do a search and found out most of the stuff, its kinda hard because a search using the word "oil" isnt allowed because its not enough letters.
What kind of filter do I need? Recommended oil is Mobile 1 0W 40 right fully synthetic? I need about 9 quarts? If I can't find 0W 40 then 5W 40 is next best? I seen brucelee uses Redline. What are your experiences on which is better? I'm in Ohio so we definately have cold winters, although I don't drive it in the winter, stored inside a semi heated garage. thx |

5-40 synthetic should be fine. I always bought OEM filters from dealer. good luck. |
Do you have a part number or brand type of filter? I'm not going to the dealer so I need to buy it somewhere. Thx

Try pelicanparts.com . They should have the oem filter for +/- $10. |
I bought a lifetime supply:Like these

the M1 5w-40 will be just fine.
while the redline is a great oil. its not a porsche certified oil. if you can find it, try something like elf/total. it will be harder to find than M1 though. if you are going to the dealer, then just tell them the year, make model, and they will tell you what you need. you can also try suncoast. |
If you have not changed your Porsche oil before, keep in mind that it does not use a regular oil filter. The o.e is just a filter filament replacement and o ring which means you also need to get the correct oil filter wrench (cap style) and you actually need about 10 quarts as 9 is not enough.

You can purchase the oil filter wrench for less than $4.00 at Autozone or local auto store. While you're there, you might want to pick up a >10 quarts oil pan for about $10.00.
I, too, purchased the oil filter and crushed ring on Ebay. (re: I think I bought a lot of four for less than $35.00). As for the oil, as box2000 noted, it's actually 9 and 1/2 quarts (0w-40 or whatever your preference). BTW, when you check the oil level, to the right of your odometer, it should be one bar less. If all the bars are lit, then you've overfilled. Enjoy! |
According to Porsche TSB 1701, the correct oil capacity for a change w/ filter is 8.75 liters (9.25 quarts).

LOL!! I stand corrected!! :D |
Yes. My Boxster S takes 9.30 quarts. You of course need to buy 10 to get that 0.30 of a quart. Definitely buy a high quality (OEM) oil filter and the 20 cent crush ring for the drain plug. The 0W40 Mobil 1 is supposedly to allow the oil to flow much more quickly on a cold start. You know what they say, that first start is where all the wear occurs when your cylinder walls are dry from the car sitting and the oil all running back into the pan. Also reduces valve train noise per the PCA Q&A Tech section.
