FabSpeed has new 986 Exhaust?
So I just happened to look on FabSpeed's site today, and noticed it looks like they have a new exhaust for the 986 that looks to be based off their 987 system.

Well apparently I'm the only one here to be interested in this (LOL), but apparently FabSpeed is working on a new exhaust for the 986 that they claim will not resonate the way their current exhaust does.
Was told that I would get a great deal on the new system as a previous customer, so who knows. Patrick |
I assume you have the single canister Fabspeed. Does it resonate a lot? Between what RPM's? I'm thinking of trying another muffler, I love the Stebro at speed but, the resonance is killer. Tolerable but, annoying at times.
If the Fabspeed has a lot of resonance the only other option I can think of is Dansk. |

I have also been wanting to get that complete fabspeed system set up
for my car. I called them about a year ago and they said they were currently out of stock and that they would contact me when they had some to ship out. A year later and Im still waiting. (I'm sure I just got buried in their to do list) I love how that fabspeed setup sounds. Probably the best sounding exhaust for the boxster that I have heard. At the time they were offering to give me a smoking deal. Now might be the time for me to call them back and see if they will honor that old deal they offered me. :) |

Yes, the single canister FabSpeed reesonates between 2200-2800 RPM. Not bad top down, annoying top up. Typical FabSpeed amazing quality, and it does sound fantastic. It also flows very well, what with the removal of the secondary cats and it being full 2" plumbing.
I am hoping the new system they have will be resonance free, as of right now, the only thing I know of that doesnt' resonate are the systems from Dansk, Gembella, CarGraphic and the PSE. Patrick |

Thanks for the clarification. On checking your link, I believe I do recall seeing that single cannister setup at one point (don't recall how long ago).
I'd be interested in answers to the same questions bmwm750 raised about the dual-cannister FabSpeed exhaust myself, though so far it looks like maybe nobody on this forum has any experience with it yet. So Patrick, you ready to take the plunge?? |
What do you guys mean by single canister? I was thinking of getting the Fabspeed system but don't want and drone.

Thanks. But I've seen the video several times. When you refer to canisters are you refering to the Cats? Are you saying that when they replace the secondary Cats with the resonators you get drone? The video on the Fabspeed site is the same video they had last year. So what is new or has changed with their system?

The FabSpeed system I have is the "older" version, which used a single rear muffler, while the "newer" system which is "still in the works" uses a dual canister muffler with a crossover pipe- a la the 987 system. Both of these delete the secondary cats.
FabSpeed needs to update the page, but I'm told this should be available in a few weeks, and they told me they'd cut me a great deal on the new system so I may try it out. I am really sick of the resonance of their older system. Patrick |
Thanks Patrick. Now I understand. In Fabspeeds old video they claim that there is absolutely no resonance with their system. Did you do the old deal? Sport headers & Cats, pipes with resonators, and the one canister muffler? That's a lot of money! Was it worth it?

I have stock headers, and the "old" system with the resonated midpipes and the single rear canister. Hate to call the nice guys at FabSpeed liars, but this system has a good bit of resonance. Like I said, we'll see if I wind up with their new system or not.

First off I know little to nothing about exhaust design and engineering, but having worked for Harman for a decade and competing successfully in car audio I do know a little about audio. The pulses of exhaust pressure produce long wave length sound waves which we know as the exhaust note. In a front engine car you've got a lot of exhaust piping going to the back in which these long waves can be canceled out or dissipated. Then putting on a free flowing muffler is no problem. In the Boxsters though we have a relatively short run of exhaust piping due to the mid engine layout, so more emphasis has to be put on the muffler itself to cancel out any undesirable sound waves. From the cross sections I've seen of the stock muffler that's EXACTLY what it does. It's designed the same as an acoustic band-pass box. I think that if you then replace the stock muffler with a straight-through, free flowing design muffler you're going to have resonance issues, no matter what you do with headers or cats. Changing the headers or cats will affect your flow, but not the cancellation of annoying resonances. I believe the key to that is proper design of the muffler can itself. Just my opinion... |
Kirk is exactly correct here. Also, FabSpeed claims no resonance with or without their headers, which backs up Kirk's point.

So, these guys are wrong when they say this exhaust fits all boxsters up to 2004? It should be 2000-2004.
