12k mile 2001 servicing questions
Hi- what would you all recommend checking out/servicing/replacing on a 12k mile 2001 non-S? The car has been serviced mostly by the book per mileage recommendations (I don't think time was taken into consideration), but obviously sits for weeks/months at a time without being driven. The car is plugged into a battery conditioner and covered.
It will be taken to the dealership for servicing, but I'd just like an idea of what I should expect and what I should not expect. I was thinking oil and filter change, air filter, brake fluid, clutch fluid, and coolant flushes. Any other Boxster-specific things that I'm forgetting? Thanks! |
I'd go for a Drive Belt and plugs. Probably flush the windshield fluid and replace with fresh too. Also, not a bad idea to run through a couple tanks of fuel with an injector cleaner like Lubro-Moly. (all easy DIY things you can do very cheaply)
If the Tires are original, even though their mileage is low, they're getting pretty old and hard. I'd start to think about replacing them, expensive as they are. Hard Tires lose alot of grip, especially important if you plan on driving in rainy or snowy conditions. |
Be sure to have them look over hoses and any rubber lines. The car is nearly 7 years old and sitting still can cause rubber items to weaken and crack from under-use. I think you hit the big stuff (fluids, coolant, flushes, drivebelt etc) though and should be ok.

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to get the oil changed, hydraulics flushed, coolant flushed, and the car inspected at the dealer. I'll do the filters/belt/plugs/etc. myself.
As for tires, I was thinking along the lines of Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 in the stock 255/40 and 205/50. The original (as far as I know) Pilots are pretty much full tread (don't know how that's possible), but they are a little on the hard side. |
Look at the 60k scheduled maintenance
as a good guide for what to do. Plus the car is 7 years old (+/-) and the tires age from exposure to the ozone as much as from wear.

Thanks again for all of the information!
