Front brake questions
Hi, my friend has a 911, he just got the front brake pad job done by the dealer.
cost him $1895. only the front brake job itself cost around $1200. my 97 boxster needs the front brake soon. will it cost that much to get it done? or I can just get the pads and find a outside guy to do it? how much for the OEM pads cost? is it a hard job to do? or maybe just like other cars? do I have to replace the brake sensor at the same time or I can just don't bother? if I go do it outside the dealer, what do I need to be careful? Please let me know Thank you |
$1895 for pads, your friends a idiot to pay that just for pads, must have been something else

Please define "brake job" Was it new pads? Was it new front rotors and pads?
Was it new calipers? Was there a brake fluid flush? What year/model 911? PCCBs? Also consider that a dealer likely charges what, $100/hr? If you have a few tools, and a desire to learn, you could do it yourself for a lot less. Hangout here long enough and you will learn this ;) |
The only way I could conceive a dealer charging that much would be for a car with PCCBs.
On your Boxster, expect front pads between $100-$180, and due to them being Brembo's, you can swap pads extremely quickly and easily, or pay a shop an hour's time to do it for you. If you need rotors as well, tack on another $250 roughly. Front rotors, pads, fluid flush, and labor should be under $600, even at the dealer. Patrick |
I just checked my friend's bill
the job for his 2001 911 was including the pads and rotor. but $175 an hour in NYC's Porsche dealer. the pads itself cost around $180. |
Your friend got ripped off if the only parts installed were pads and rotors. Even with fluid flush, sounds like they charged for 5-6 hours of labor which is way too much.
|
^ What he said...your friend got killed on labor/parts. I will do my brakes for a fraction of that and they are exactly the same brakes. If you don't mind getting your hands a little dirty and knowing your car a bit better do it yourself.

I was just quoted 1100 dollars for front rotors and pads only on a Box S from the local dealer.
I got the parts plus a Motive brake bleeder and fluid for a little more than half of that from Pelican Parts in the last week or so. But 600 dollars for all this from a dealer?? Not sure how that's possible. |
