Blew an engine...

thankfully, not the car! Was riding on a friend's EX-500 today in Malibu when a little power loss turned into a clacking, tapping, pop!, and eventually a horrible grinding. Not sure what happened, possibly a valve spring or maybe the cylinder ring. By the time I came to a stop, there was a hole in the crankcase and a connnecting rod sticking out. Fortunately, it didn't seize or anything, so no drama.

It was pretty much age, 38k on a 16 year old bike. But the first thing I thought about....what it would feel like to hear the Box suffer the same fate... :(

Too bad, the EX is a great little bike.

38k isn't much. My cbr f3 finally checked out with 90k mi - oil on the plugs - would fire no more. My current gsxr has 33k and runs great and see's near triple digits every ride. Not to brag, just that you should expect alot more from a bike with good maintenance.

Yeah, this bike had seen a lot of action though, it's probably been thru 3-4 owners, and treated like a beater-bike it's whole life. Plus, it was starting to show low on oil when I was riding, the owner said beforehand not to worry about it and still doesn't believe it really played a role, but I wonder..
