Harry Truman
Harry Truman was a Democrat...I believe he made about $24,000 a year, no secret service, no lavish parties, vacation?, even drove himself home after leaving office. Those where the days.
I remember in the 70's reading or hearing on the TV about higher pay for government workers, which includes Congress and the President which was to bring in better people for public service...and look what it got us...BANKRUPTCY.

The source of our $14 Trillion debt is NOT from govt workers or politician pay checks.
Quite the contrary it is from govt payments to PRIVATE citizens in the form of Medicare and more in Social Security checks than the recipients payed in before retirement. Toss in a few off-budget unfunded wars, F-35 Joint Strike Fighter costing upwards of $12 billion, F/A Hornets costing $2 billion, air craft carrier replacement nearing $3 billion, Predator and Reapers drones costing $2 billion all totaling over a trillion and half dollars in military and counter-terror.
We used to be able to offset those entitlement and defense costs from manufacturing but over the last decade we gave that away so that Wal-Mart could stock its shelves with cheap flat panel TVs, Ipads, yo gaba gaba t-shirts, comforters, shoes and other communist made products.
But the easy thing to do is to blame Congress and govt while WE are the ones who elected the very "pro-business" govts that set into motion the outsourcing of our economy (for NOTHING) and deregulation of the banks who wasted no time in ruining our vitally important credit flow.

Perfectlap, I did some quick math and SS recipients would have to live to well past 107 years old to get out all the cash they put into the program. Now Medicare might be a different animal, but SS is not going well because the fund's been robbed from repeatedly by Congress through the years.
Am I not correct on this?
BTW, In the worst recession since the great depression, one would think the First Lady would curtail her overseas travel to show the country she's cutting back like the rest of us are FORCED to do.
[Disclaimer: I dislike both parties in our two-party system with a vengeance so don't think my Obama bashing means I'm a tea party backer. Every seated congressman should be forced out of office next November. I'm all for what GOOOH | Get Out of Our House: A non-partisan plan to elect citizen representatives! is attempting to do.]

Personal vacation expenses are borne by the family, not the country. Just like meals and other personal expenses. If you'ld like to throw blame around, blame a do-nothing Congress. They're the ones who authorize all government spending. The trillion or more that President B expensed for the unnecessary wars hasn't helped either. If you want to keep it "real", keep our jobs, manufacturing, troops and aid home where it belongs.

Steve, I can assure you that the Obamas did not pay for Airforce One, all the fuel, the pilots, the secret security detail, and so forth for her global galavanting.

Defense spending, which accounted for almost 1/4 of the entire US budget last year, 60% of discretionary spending, and was 7-8 times more than the entire rest of the world spent put together, is a huge issue. I spent 24 years in the service only to see it become an unsustainable drain on our country.
And you are correct, bank deregulation is probably our biggest problem at this point, along with the amount of corporate money and influence in politics.
It's very sad.
