Excise Tax
 

I made my way over to the local tax collector's office today to pay the yearly excise tax on the Dangermobile . Each year I can't help but think how this is just another form of legalized extortion on the part of Uncle Sugar to "keep the man down" . If the premise of the law is to impose a tax in order to defray the costs associated with road repair,maintenance and general wear and tear, then why not come up with a formula that establishes a tax rate based on the type of vehicle that will likely cause this kind of damage, rather than penalizing people for having presumably newer, nicer vehicles (i.e. gentler on the roads) by levying steep taxes based on their valuation . Ooops ! I may have just made a value judgement on society ! Hold on, my phone is ringing. Could it be the Great Messiah Mr. Obama himself calling ? Maybe its Geithner or Bernanke ? Nah, they don't pay taxes. Could it be Sarah ? You know Russia is only about 3,000 miles from my back yard ! I bet that its Michael Vick, and he needs a ride to the vet ....... :cool:

How could the United Soviet Socialist Commonwealth of Mass. give a paid St. Patty's day off to the state employees if they don't charge people like you stupid taxes. Suck it up, you could be on government assistance getting free health care, free food. free housing and some spending money while you get a free education. Ed

The tax is clearly structured to take from those who the Govt believes "have the dough."

As I recall, in MA, the excise tax on cars is actually paid to the town (perhaps shared) as a "property tax."

The gas tax supposedly pays for the roads.

Either way, you pay for the "privledge" of owning and using property.

Yes, you're correct about the tax being paid to the town. However, its not considered a property tax, but rather a duty that is imposed for the "privilege" of road use, wherein funds are used to reduce the number of "tolls" and to maintain infrastructure . Any any case, its a tax that nevertheless feels like a noose around the necks of the working class !

Yeah - I got hosed on my wife's 2011 Grand Cherokee that we bought in Sept.

So, that's more than $1000 initially for a new Boxster? Jeez, now I'm sure, no way that I'm moving back to Boston.

Not every state has automobile excise tax . But, Taxachusetts does ! :(
