Any scotch drinkers out there?

Wifey got me a bottle of Glenlivet Nadura for Valentine's day. If that's not love, I don't know what is. Damn fine bottle, but my fave still is the Glenlivet French Oak Reserve. The Nadura really packs a punch and maintains smoothness, but it doesn't have the depth/variety of flavor that the FOR has.

Speyside single malts are good starting point

We drove up to Oban and took the ferry to South Uist in the Inner Hebrides (about eight hours or more). There's a causeway that joins the three islands, South Uist, Beneculla and North Uist. From North Uist you take a ferry to Skye (an hour). We stayed at Portree and there I tried the local malt, Talisker. A balance of sweetness and peatiness. I drank rather a lot.

intro to scotch

Two months or so ago Wine Spectator's cover story was a review of single malts. I'm starting in the under $75 range and kind of building a shopping list.

Ran out of Glenlivet 18 a while back & been meaning to replace it with something.....I guess I'm heading to the store in a bit. Recommendations? I can't bring myself to spend 2x on the Macallan 18.

I read this article (section) and found it fascinating.

As luck would have it, our Rotary Club had a single malt Scotch tasting in a private wine celler. The tasting was limited to 20. Every person was given one shot from each bottle. 6 bottles were brought by the importer.

My favorite was Oban 14 (rich fruit).
Next was Dalwhinnie 15 (sweet floral).
Others:
Cragganmore 12 (complex depth).
Talisker 10 (spicy smoke).
Lagavulin 16 (deep smoke).
Caol Ila 18 (sweet smoke).

My two favorite blends are:
Johnny Walker Blue Label
Usquaebach (hard to find but delicious) pictured below

My favorite is anCnoc (www.ancnoc.com) which you can only get in the UK. Fortunately they will ship it to the US! Next to that I like Dalwhinnie 15 year.

Anything from Islay.

Spent some time there last May.

I love Glenlivet but often go for Irish whiskey too. I still have a bottle of Bushmills Millenium 25 year old single malt I got as a gift in '99.

Lobo, buy a bottle of Glenlivet or Macallan 12 year old scotch and sip that with an ice cube in it. There's a huge price difference in the 12 and 18 and if you drink good brands, an uneducated pallet won't know the difference at first.

Just tell your wife not mix expensive scotch it with coke. I almost lost it when I saw her pouring her third glass of Macallan 18 into a glass and then dousing it with coke.

I've also discovered that I enjoy sipping a snort of really good 100% agave tequila just as much as scotch. Do try that if you haven't done it yet.

You'l be sent to Purgatory for putting ice in any premium scotch .

RandallNeighbour 03-27-2011 10:04 AM

Coke sends you to hell, ice to purgatory. I'll take purgatory.

The scotch importer told us at the tasting that a cube of ice actually brings out the flavor in single malts. Not purgatory. Heaven.

Johnny Danger 03-27-2011 01:09 PM

I take it straight up, room temperature . Just like my women !

jdiba 03-27-2011 06:40 PM

Glenmorangie 18 year old single malt, with a good cigar.

Paul 03-27-2011 06:49 PM

+1, there's a bottle of that hiding on my bar.....
