Thinking about buying a Boxster
 

I'm 51. Have owned may vehicles, and I do almost all the work on them myself. There are now five drivers in my family, and I currently own three Saabs, on Mazda MX-5, and a Ford F-150.

I have never owned a Porsche. I have toyed with the idea of buying an older Boxster for a while now. I recently came across this ad for a 2001. It has 65K miles and they're asking $12500.

I have read about engine problems with the Boxsters built before 2000, so is it correct to say this was made right after they fixed the problem?

At any rate, am looking for advice.

Not sure what engine problems means. If you are referring to the IMS issue, then this 2001 is not immune to the IMS issue. Porche is a performance car and will need periodic maintenance, but not unreasonable. This is not an S so the price is too high.

Hi I just bought a 2001 Boxster non S with closer to 90000 miles in the Chicago area a few months ago. I paid 9000 for it and I feel like that was a bit high for this area, but we needed triptronic for my wife because it's "her car". That narrows the choices down quite a bit. I did read about the IMS issues before buying it, and it didn't concern me too much. We paid to have a certified Porsche mechanic inspect it before we bought it. He was able inform me as to the basic maintenance it will need in the future. It was really helpful and informative. I didn't mind paying a bit more, knowing it was in good sound shape mechanically. If you like to tinker with vehicles, this car is perfect. You'll save a lot of money if you can do the maintenance yourself. I've done tons of cheap modification and upgrades to it already, and I love driving it too. This forum has pretty much everything you need to know if you end up buying one. I've learned quite a bit, but still know very little.

I bought an 04 S march of 18 with 27k miles. Be prudent realizing the age of the car and enjoy. To ease my mind about the ims I purchased a durametric tool and monitor my cam deviations on a monthly basis. Mine are rock steady so I have less concern. Rick
