how long does it take to checking oil level
new to this,i'll jump to it.
Whats the average time you have to wait for the oil to drain from engine to pan.so you can get an oil level reading?? I recently bought a 05' Boxster S. with 90,000mi. on it. when the engine is cold.tells me I have to wait 24-25min. even when its warmed up its says wait 3-5min. dont want to sit at a station that long. |
I’ve had my ‘03 S for 5 weeks now and I’ve observed that when cold, it takes between 5 and 10 seconds to get an oil level reading. When I start immediately after stopping with a warm engine, it takes about 1 minute

Consult the manual as all depends on MY...
My 986 it varied... could be 6sec, 2min, 24min or even 60min as I recall. Mid 9x6 they changed a bit I think and then again with 9x7... and again on the 9x7.2 with intro of DFI. Now, many of the newest Porsches require motor at operating temperature, vehicle on a level surface. engine running for 2min. Wonder what the requirements will be in the Taycan ;) |
Mine in the morning first stsrt takes 20 seconds maybe, if i stop and restart can be 5 minutes. I checked the manual and waiting fir the oil check to eprun really isnt required other than first start up of the day.

thanks all,
if my driveway was level,it wouldn't be a prob. just gonna have to remember to check when I get to level destination. if it says 1min. or longer.i have to pull key an wait.dont want to leave ignition on any longer.waited 2min. once, had trouble starting. |
quicker if you check the digital display on the dash. Dip stick could be used once a month to check the condition of oil

The best way to check oil level in a 986 is to allow the engine to warm up to 180+ degrees. Next drive at 3000 rpm or less to your next stop to allow oil to drain out of heads to sump. Park on level surface & the longer you wait to check oil with dipstick a little more oil will drain into pan.
I don't rely on the dash gauge but I do check it when I restart the engine after getting gas. I have the FVD deep oil pan so I deduct 1 quart from max capacity. |
