Didn't expect this.

Hi,
I'm a newbie to Porsche.
Came home last week, open the garage door and there was my wife in front of a car.
What's this i asked, its 1999 Boxster, and why is it here, well i bought it.
Great, perfect another project. She was told it sat in a garage for a year or two. Had
it towed to our house. i got to looking at the all the paperwork and it sat in the garage for 4 years.
Someone had looked at it and told her the engine was blown and would't start. I put in a new battery, threw in a few gallons of fresh gas, turned the key and started right up, blowing alot of white smoke, so i shut it down.
so, i ordered up the Porsche 101 book, and i figure i have to fix the following before I turn the key again:
drain the gas tank, new fuel filter, new fuel pump
new oil and oil filter (way to much oil in the car)
new-AOS
new plugs
drain and flush the radiator

That's for starters, my question is there something else i should do before i start?
i look forward to learning about this car, and getting it back to running.
Any help, advice, thoughts-greatly appreciated!

A few suggestions:

Check that there isn't intermix. Either oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil.

Check the brakes thoroughly. You don't want to start driving a car with corroded brake lines or other potentially serious brake problems.

Get a decent code reader that can read the Porsche proprietary codes and read all codes. Fix any problem they indicate.

Make sure there isn't rodent damage. Look for nests and if you find one, look for chewed cables.

Good luck!

Before draining the coolant, check the overflow tank for signs of intermix.
The '99 is a pretty solid car. My guess would be AOS, though if it sat for a long time, a bit of smoke doesn't necessarily mean anything.

I'm only about 20 minutes from Shawnee. If you ever need some advice or want to check things out with the Durametric, let me know and I can swing by.

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestions. I got into the engine this weekend and saw lots and lots of metal
pieces and filings past the throttle box. It blew something, what ever it is, it's bad.
That's a wrap for me, i'll get rid of the Boxster and move on.
This is a great site,
See ya.
