Opinion on 2002 Boxster
Hi everyone. I am really glad to have found this forum and have really enjoyed reading the threads.
I am seriously considering a 2002 Guards Red Boxster (base, non-S) with 47K miles. Car is a Tiptronic car, which I prefer since I do mostly city driving. It looks to be in great condition - interior (black) shows extremely well, dealer has both keys. Looks to have the Bose stereo (2 dash, 2 door speakers) but not sure what other options it may have. My test drive didn't reveal anything bad other than the ABS light was on, so I need to understand what that means. The dealer is asking $16,500 and there may be room to go down a little further. Spoke to the dealer who agreed to let me take it to a very reputable Porsche indi mechanic near my home prior to the deal for a prepurchase inspection. Curious as to thoughts and opinions on this car. Thanks in advance for your help! http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1374978961.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1374978978.jpg |
KBB shows retail at $19.5 with that mileage and tiptronic, but that seems high to me. I would be concerned about the IMS and would question the dealer about that and if they have the maintenance history.
Otherwise, looks great in pictures. |

The price seems competitive from what I've seen. Dealer is a small dealer and has no service records. Supposedly a 1 owner car but I have not yet pulled the Carfax to verify.
On the IMS the Porsche specialist I am using for the PPI said he's never seen one break before which I found interesting and positive. The car looks great so eager to see how the PPI goes. |
kwadublin, the car does look great. However, if your indy says he has never seen an ims bearing failure, then one has to wonder about his level of experience. Afterall, the numbers released by Porsche in the course of the class action suit indicated that between 8-10% of the single-row bearing cars suffered failures - and those numbers, of course, only refer to the ones that were brought into Porsche dealerships or for which a claim was made.

Brad, good point and I thought I would get that reaction when I typed my original message. I may have heard him wrong. This Indi is a 20+ year guy who specializes in Porsches and is well known and used by many in my area. I was talking to him about a number of things why we spoke on the phone so my recollection may be flawed.
I was hoping to get the car inspected tomorrow but he is heading out of town for a long weekend so I will have to wait until next week to have it inspected. Eager to see what he says. |
Good to hear and finger's crossed that the PPI turns out well and that your search is over.
Cheers! Brad |
