Got my first Boxster!

Hello,

I'm glad to have found this forum of experienced Boxster enthusiasts! I have always dreamed of owning a Porsche, saved up for a few years and just recently bought a 2002 with 55K miles and a brand new top. It's in immaculate condition (Speed Yellow) and bought it from the Porsche dealership in Nashville. The car was a trade in on a 911.

I had done what I thought was a lot of research on the big used car sites and most all reviews were positive. I wish I had done a bit more research though as now that I've found this forum (and others), I'm scared to death of IMS bearing failure. Just spent 15K on the car, can't afford another 15K for a new engine! The sad thing is I've been on a high since finally realizing this small dream of mine and now I've come crashing down with fear of this failure. Guess I'll save up $2,500 for an new IMS & RMS and leaver 'er in the garage til I do. I'm absolutely in love with the car already though.

Glad to be a part of this group!

Welcome to the Forum!

Congrats on the car!

As you've discovered there's a lot of information and knowledgeable folks here. You will get various views on how concerned to be about the IMS issue. Try not to let it keep you from enjoying the car.

Post some pictures when you get a chance. We love looking at them.

Thanks!

Thanks ddb! Glad to be here. I did just visit my hometown's "expert" on Porsche who has been working on the cars for years. I do feel better in that he said he's never personally seen the problem with the IMS before but he only has about 8 Boxsters that he services. I'm posting the pics I took at the dealership before I brought the car home. Again, thanks!

crogers106,

Wow - that thing is beautiful! Thanks for posting the pics!

Love the wheels. The stripe really sets them off. I also like the yellow console and roll bar.

Nice find! Did you buy it as is or did you add the wheels and console?

Enjoy,

ddb

Thanks! I've been looking for a while and when I found this one - I had to have it - classic color, loved the wheels, etc. The wheels were already on it. They gave me the original window sticker and the painted console and roll bar were on the sticker as a factory option the previous owner paid $1250 for.

Crogers106, Beautiful car !!! Nice find !!! I shared your fear about the IMS until I took the car to my INDY for it's 90 k service. He has been in business for 30+ years working on, building and racing Porsche. His customer waiting room is full of "trophies" from Porsche events. He told me that he has NEVER seen an IMS failure . This made me feel better and I drive my car every chance I get !!! Enjoy your new car !!! Max

Beautiful car! SY is definitely the best color on these cars.

I think the mantra for new owners should be "don't worry, just drive." Have fun.

Thank you all! I'm sure you're right. I still have to pinch myself each time I walk through my garage! Such a thrill to finally own one.

Ok, Ok I can't take it any longer. Will trade white for yellow. And that garage visit 19 times a day ? Will wear off a bit as time goes by. Max

The car looks great....

love the yellow with the black rims. Speed yellow is my favorite color too (along with signal green and orange). I think the car would look great with a black "boxster script" decal on the rockers and some litronics...Enjoy your new toy!

I m h o

Life's too short to worry about an IMS. I've been driving my '98 for three years now and enjoy every minute of it. Just remember that on this forum most of the talk about IMS failures comes from those who profit from retrofits.
