Heater Core Bypass

Does anybody know if putting a shutoff valve on the intake hose for the heater core would cause any problems. I would use it to shut off the flow during the summer so that my ac will blow cold air instead of a mixture because of the foam issue with the flaps. I could also just unhook the two hoses at the heater core and join them together so that the fluid would still flow its normal route just not to the heater core. Both of these options seem like they would be much easier than taking the dash apart and taping up the flaps but still having an equal outcome.
