BMW X5 LED Foglight retrofit

Hi guys,

So I bought these foglights from TRS for $50 months ago, and have been finding a way to install them. I made a post at HIDplanet and got the idea from a member there. Basically this involves cutting the grille and shaping the brackets until everything fits. Here are some pictures!

And now you've just blocked the air flow to the radiators by a significant amount.

Yes, I have thought about that, and have been tracking the coolant temperature with my Bluetooth OBD2 scanner, and it's still doing fine. If it ever comes to a point where this becomes a real problem, then I'll just uninstall everything.

Nice work! ;)

Did you build the headlights, also? I bet you can turn night into day between the headlights and fog lights :)

looks good!

Really adds interest to the front design and makes a person look to a lower area of the front. This makes the car appear lower and meaner!

Looks next to OEM! Great job! :D

Yeah, the headlights are Mini H1 retrofit. The difference is so much that it's hard for me to drive a car without HID projectors. The Mini H1 and those fog lights complement one another very well because the Mini H1 shines far down the road while the fog lights go extremely wide to the side!

A quick update: I've decided to remove these fog lights because they're blocking the air intake too much. Even though these are extremely incredible fog lights with impressive performance, the housing is pretty big and it takes up the almost half the space in front of the radiator. I don't want to compromise the car's performance and reliability. Function over Form right?

So, what did u do with the LED fogs now? Asking cause I wonder if they would fit in my 335is?

Selling them. They just actually sold yesterday. They might be a little big if you want to use the included housing.

Hate that I had to take them off because the brightness, the color, and especially the beam width on these are absolutely impressive.

Just a thought incase someone else was thinking about doing this. I wonder if you could move them to the inside of the intake and tuck them back? Instead of cutting the grill, you would cut holes in the air ducts. I think you wouldn't impede air flow as much. Next time I get some broken ones in, I might try it.

hancock1701 04-04-2015 11:07 AM

I think that might work. However, these are pretty bulky, and if you choose to keep the vertical alignment bracket like I did, the housing shape is pretty awkward to fit anywhere. I still like the look when these are at the far left and right ends better than when they come close to the center.

Thanks for the pics, now time to measure my fogs

Lobo1186 04-11-2015 02:50 PM

If you were really dedicated to the cause, you could just do a center radiator... or some scoops that go under the fogs to bring air up and under.
