Replacing gear knob

I am hoping to replace the gear knob on my 04 986 2.7. The gear knob and gaiter are moulded into one. There is definitely no set screw. In the Bentley manual it references turning the lower collar 90 degrees and then remove the knob. Can anybody shed any light on this, I am confused.

On my 01 (no set screw) I just grab it and pull up. Hard.

On my dads 98 with the black leatherette knob there was no screw. Kind of straddle the console with one foot in each footwell and the top down and pull up- hard! Remember to use your knees not your back ;-)

On my 01 S there was a set screw tucked up inside (had to roll the boot up pretty far to get it) but that has the premium leather/aluminum knob
