Yet another garage door opener install
I went for a clean self contained install of a garage door opener in the batwing. Picked up a rear defroster switch and was inspired by this guys install clicker to use a double pole reed switch to simultaneously light the switch led.
Parts : Keychain opener - new Ebay 2 switch batwing - new late style matte finish defroster switch - used Ebay late style matte finish switch blank - new Ebay OE porsche switch socket and connectors - new DPST reed relay and DIP socket - Mouser Schematic : This shows why you can't simultaneously activate the remote and light the switch status LED. The switch common is +12V and the LEDs are switched separately to ground in normal use by the control relay in the car. The DPST reed switch allows you to do both. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1367775917.jpg Finished assembly and wiring : The absolute hardest part of this project was snapping the switch blank into the batwing. It took me 30 minutes and sore fingers to finally get it seated. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1367775934.jpg Wires routed out of remote case : Two wires come straight off of the microswitch in the remote, the other two come straight off of the +/- terminals of the battery. This remote uses a standard 12V which is perfect to activate the defroster switch status light and should last a long time. The reed relay is correspondingly a 12V version. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1367775957.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1367776035.jpg Socketed reed relay. Decided to do this rather than risk soldering straight to a $6 part. Plus it can be easily swapped if it dies in the future. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1367776050.jpg Parts secured in with velcro and sticky tape. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1367776076.jpg Finished install with bright status light and yes, the garage did open too. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1367776089.jpg |
Slick! So do you feel this is the best arrangement after all your research?
Will the signal be strong enough from down low in the car? |
Signal range is fine for my needs. Haven't really tested from how far it will work.
This was the best arrangement for me. Easy integration into the car, cute challenge to wire up the status light and it looks great. |
Nice work! The little defrost symbol kind of looks like a garage door, too. ;)

Very cool, nice!

I installed one on my motorcycle, connected it to the Hi-Beam switch. I might do the same on my boxster. GOOD IDEA!
