What Castrol Oil?
Hi guys
Putting an order in with Castrol for my Motorbike Garage, may aswell get some for the Porsche, any one reccomend a Castrol oil for a 99 2.5l Boxster? |
In the US, we use Castrol Syntec 10w-40 (now Castrol Edge with Syntec Technology); if you can get the "Pro Edge" 10W-40 (not available in the US), even better...........

I've started using Castrol TWS, which is normally sold only in Europe, but is available at any BMW auto dealer.
It is the only oil reccommended for BMW M group engines, and was part of the fix for the E46 M3 bearing problem, where BMW recalled all M3 engines, replaced all crakshaft bearings whether they needed it or not, switched everyone to Castrol TWS oil, and then gave all engines in the field a 100,000 mile warranty!(too bad Porsche doesn't stand behind its engines like that). Anyway, from what I understand, the Castrol TWS uses boron as a substitute for ZDDP for bearing pressure lubrication. Apparently boron doesn't harm catalytic converters like ZDDP. |

I have been talking to several indys around here and this is the craziest thing i have heard. One local told me about another that (confirmed from him) his mobile one rep offered him a bet to carry only mobile products.
Told him to run moblie one synthetic in his personal cars and only______ change the filter every 5000 miles and top off oil. If the engine goes mobile one will replace, that was four years and 96,000 miles ago on wifes dd. He now swears by mobile oil and will not allow anything else in his shop. |

At a Porsche Parade Tech session that I attended, a PNCA rep claimed he was tasked by Porsche to drive a new 996 turbo and only top off the Mobil 1 and change the filter every 15,000 miles. He was also instructed to use 87 octane gas. After 100,000 miles the motor was torn down and everything was within the wear limits.

I have noticed a penchant for folks recommending oils not available here in the US for use in their Porsche. I reckon it is the same thing that made Coors popular for many years. Everyone likes what they cannot get. Like Shell, Motul, Total, Repsol or any other foreign oil company that does not distribute to the US. Doesn't make it any better or any worse for that matter.

Here is a little tale about change the filter and top off. I lived in NE Baltimore city as a kid in the 60's. Not far from my house were 2 C&P Telephone Co. service offices. My Dad had a friend with a used car lot and repair shop across the street from one of them. Dad's friend would often do work on the phone company trucks. He told us one day that the phone company only changed oil filters and topped off. Never changed the oil completely. They believed at the time it was adequate for the service life of their trucks which was over 100K mikes. Now keep in mind that was back in the 60's with "good" old dino oil. I think we were mostly using straight 30 weight or 10W-30 at best back then.
They also were testing the center brake light theory back then. Now it is standard on every car. Who can say ? Maybe there is some validity to change and top off. It would be interesting to see some in depth scientific details about the subject. For now, I will continue to change both and do so way more often then Porsche says to. |
