Dome Light / Top Latch Issue
I tried searching under many many titles for further information on this topic to no avail so I apologize in adance if this has already been addressed but...
The one piece unit that houses the "dome" light as well as the locking point for the top has decided to "drop in" on me. It appears that the nuts that hold this piece in place are in 3 or 4 parts. Very odd design indeed. I simply cannot get the screws / bolts to lock in! I'm getting really annoyed as I refuse to drive the car in "ghetto" fashion with the piece either removed or hanging down in front of the mirror. Any advice on how I can rectify this annoyance?? Thanks in advance for any input. Regards, Larry |
Can you take a picture? I've taken the housing apart to check the wiring for the bulb when I thought it was loose.

I'll do it tonight and post it in the AM.

Search this forum for "nutserts." I used this approach and I was quite happy. I think others have used the plastic drywall anchors.

There are captive brass nut in the windshield for the screws for the visors and the screws for the light. The nuts can split so that they can no longer hold a screw. This is not an uncommon problem.
Pocture is the visor nuts and you can see they have split. |
happened to mine as well, the nuts split and no longer hold a screw in place.
i used a plastic drywall approach, and its been holding good so far. |
Here's a step by step write up on how to R&R them w/ a permanent solution using nutserts as Toolpants notes. Takes about 1.5-2hours to do once you have what's needed.

great. i just might have to do this afterall...
thx for the link |
DJ- definitely do it. Not hard at all - just take your time extracting the old ones. As said, only took about 1.5-2hrs (including photographing most of the steps). Obviously my photography skills aren't nearly as good as yours, but it'll get you where you need to be. ;) PM me w/ any questions.
