Smaller diameter tires, street/autox? Anyone run modified?

I'm looking for anyone that has run with smaller than stock diameter tires. While I would only autox for suspension tuning I'm basically building an autox type 986. I'm not interested in top end, just cornering in a very light configuration with emphasis on nimbleness. I was thinking 235/40/17, squared, which are around 24.4" diameter and most are in the 22-25 lb. range with 8.2 -9" tread width. I'm interested in the lower gearing, potentially lower weight, and lowering car. Will this be enough tread in a less than 2,400 lb. Boxster with maybe 180 bhp? The lighter tires tend towards the narrower widths so might consider 25 lbs. with 9" tread width. Tread rating 200 or less but street legal.
Or do you disagree? Go for the extra width? Thanks.

This appears to have larger diameter tires but I'm sort of aiming in this direction;
