PCA Announces New Spec Boxster Shock Package

From the PCA;

The Bilstein PSS9 shock, which is the spec shock for SPB, is no longer available, and it appears that parts to rebuild this model shock are also NLA. The SPB rules are amended to add the Motion Control Systems SPB damper, part number SET-1WNR-SPB-01 as an alternate shock for the class. The aluminum upper rear spring seat and the tender springs and separators may be aftermarket parts so long as they are substantially similar to the PSS9 part. Minor trimming of rain gutter sheet metal in the rear trunk above the shock adjuster to improve access is allowed.

Here is a link to all of the details with shock dyno results comparing the PSS9 to the new MCS. Existing Swift springs will work with the new shocks. New springs will be aftermarket from Tarett. Shock package is $2,650, New springs are $875.

PCA MCS Spec Boxster Shock System

The original announcement stated the following "Current SPB racers can use their existing springs with the new MCS system, those building new cars will have to buy a spring kit designed for the MCS system."

I'm thinking that I'll likely buy the new shocks for my SPB, and use my existing PSS9 springs. The Bilsteins will then be used on my 986 daily driver with the original springs.

So it looks like I'll be going over to the MCS shocks because I have no idea how old my PSS9s are when I bought the car a few years ago and was hoping to rebuild them. I'm still new to all the nuances of racing and race cars so please forgive my ignorance regarding the following questions. Are there any advantages to replacing the springs from the PSS9 to the new spring package? And when (if ever) should springs be replaced? And how often are people rebuilding their shocks?

Thanks for any opinions or info you may have.

I have my PSS9's in a box awaiting install (2 years now). I'll start with those and see how the MCS thing goes.
