Michelin Pilot Super Sport (255/4R17) Availability
Are you still able to buy Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires for the 986 17 inch wheels. I had a square set up when I had my track Boxster few years ago, I had 17x8.5 50mm wheels with Michelin Pilot Super Sport 255/40R17 tires on them.
I could not find 17 inch Michelin Pilot Super Sport anymore in that size, Looks like 17” has been discontinued. I am wondering what you folks are using for those tires for track (not race). Thanks |
If you want to stay with a street tire, I would suggest the Bridgestone RE-71R. They are available in the size you want and have excellent grip. My only gripe is that they wear our rather fast on the track. Probably the fastest 200 wear tire out there at the moment.

PSS is not really a good track tire. It is one of the best street tires
For track street tires in 17's you have a lot to choose from RE-71R Driezza ZII Start Spec Hankook R-S3 (soon R-S4) and many more As far as tread life, the stickier the tire, the softer the compound, the shorter it lasts |
They are being replaced by the Super Sport 4s. Not sure on it's availability.

Thanks all, I had Michelin Pilot Super Sport in my street/track Boxsters in the past and they have been great tires. So in a nutshell, Michelin Pilot Super Sport are not being produced for 17"?
Thanks |
Please use your purchasing power to buy a better compound. JAYG has it correct in term of fastest to slowest and durability is in the opposite order. RE-17R are the fastest available compound in the 200 wear rating.
I would propose VENTUS V12 EVO2 K120. It handles as well as the RS-3 but is less tolerant to heat. I believe it was designed as a direct competitor for the MPSS for 1/2 the price, same thread wear rating also. |
