New SCCA BSP class for boxsters

This Sunday is the first autoX in my region and also marks the first trial that my base 2.5 box will have to compete in BSP against all other boxsters and caymans. Time to find a new car i guess. I'd don't see how I'll be competitive. What are your thoughts?

j.fro 03-27-2014 08:51 AM

Good news and bad news. Yeah, the 2.5 Box will have a tough time in BSP. For VMSC, I'm not sure that they've got a lot of folks running that class - you may be all by yourself.
The S2000, when driven well, can be a beast.

Not sure what they were thinking or "who" they got input from :barf:

We work them over every year for the Boxster :) but not for the 2.5 in BSP

We had a hell of a time against the Evo's (Tom Berry) when we ran the 986/w a Cayman 3.4 in it) in BSP a few years back.

I do like how SCCA allows us to update/backdate. That makes it fun and keeps me on my toes :)

Just saw that you've got a 370Z Nismo in your class. That's not a fair pairing. What mods have put you into prepared instead of street?

truegearhead 04-03-2014 06:17 AM

I wonder how many p-cars are out there that are competitive in autoX. I did well enough to beat out the other p-cars and hit 11th overall but the pax time killed me. I'll focus on modifications this year. It's stock besides the exhaust and seats so I have a long way to go in the street prepared class.

I've only been to one autocross, it was an SCCA autocross at the Gainesville raceway. The overall winner was a 70's 911. I was the only other Porsche there, in B Street. I am totally stock; how does one get out of the Street class into the other classes? With upgraded tires, suspension, UD pulley, exhaust, etc?

My son had a Miata, stock, and we ran in E-Street. It looks like all Miatas 93-2005 including MazdaSpeed are in E-Street now.

Is that how the classes work? Start in Street, and then move up based on mods?

Didnt the SCCA bumper boxster and cayman variants into ASP? Thats where I am at the moment, getting my ass kicked by the Evos.

Did they bump the 370Z out of C stock? Its about time....

Basically the boxster really isnt competitive in the stock classes, the S2000s and the Evos will eat you alive. Did you see the events from last years nationals? The first 7 or 8 places were Honda S2000s, with a couple of Caymans sprinkled in.

Im 100% sure the boxster is NOT in BSP for 2014

Wow! All years/models/engines of Boxster/Cayman are in the same class along with all years of 996 and 997? Hard to imagine a 2.5 Boxster being competitive in this class. :(

SP is a tough class to begin with... I went from battling well developed S2000s in BSP to Fully prepped Evos, Subbies, and FD Rx7s in ASP. I believe the base 2.5/2.7 is still in C stock though, and the boxster S is in B stock. This is my second year in Street Prepared and Im still going through lots of changes.

At least I'm not running a Delorean! I can't imagine that being competing. The way to go here is a Cayman R.

While we're on the topic, here are the (p-car) results from the AutoX. Maybe the ol 2.5 isn't all that bad.

97 Porsche Boxster 53.536
71 Porsche 911 54.85
06 Porsche Cayman S 55.911
01 Porsche Carrera 4 56.312
14 Porsche Cayman 59.637
08 Porsche Cayman 61.534

It finished 11th overall out of 80 cars, but it was VERY wet which saved me.

Big smooth Lee, thanks for correcting me by the way. It also looks like since I only have an exhaust I should be running in Stock.

Bigsmoothlee 04-15-2014 06:17 AM

Good Job, work on seat time.

Just remember, its not all about power, its about skill and suspension. Many sub 200hp cars that weigh about the same as base boxster can be very fast.

Also, max out your alignment. Go to your local spot, and ask him for these settings. Its the cheapest mod you can do, and it'll be a night and day difference.

Front:
Toe- 0
Camber- -1 deg ( all you can get, you may have to show the tech how to remove the trim inside of the front trunk to max out the front camber )

Rear:
Toe in- 1/16
Camber- -1 deg

These were my first settings while my suspension was stock. Im sure others will have great alignment advice as well.

Congrats on beating Englebert. The frog (green 71 911) is a helluva car. It's right around 1600 lbs, and he's sporting a 3.6 from a 964. He and I have gone back and forth in F-prepared for a while. Sooner or later I'm going to make a VMSC event. Something cool coming up will be the AX for the Richmond Porsche Meet. Sunday, June 1 at Southside Speedway. Shenandoah Region Porsche Club of America

haha, that will never happen again, the rain saved me. He beat me by 2 seconds on Sunday. You should definitely try and make a VMSC event, I'll sign up for the PCA event at South Side, I haven't been there in years
