Autocross R-Compound Tires???

Soo... Looking for 17" tires and I know most people not run either Hoosier A/R6's, or Kumho V710s... However, both of these have 225/45/17 available... Neither of them have 255/40/17 available, so what does everyone run???

I mean what other R-Compounds are actually competitive for comparable price?

Topless 02-05-2012 06:32 PM

Avon slicks

I don't believe you can run Slicks in stock class. I think they must meet DOT regulations.

Last year I was running Nitto NT-01 tires and had a very good season.

I just started running NT-01's in December and love them. Reasonably priced too.

The real question is how competitive are your regional events and how competitive are you.

The A6 will likely be among the fastest tires for Autocross, but they are expensive and don't last long. I noticed they now make a 225/40-17 which paired with a 245/40-17 would work on stock rims. The smaller diameter 245 would also give you a bit of a gearing advantage.

Now if you are really competitive you should get wider rims in a 17 or 18 and run at least least 245F and 275R.

Those A6's are awsome. The first time I put some on, I took FTD at the local auto-x against 911's, 'vettes, and heavily modified turbo civic. They are easily worth 3 whole seconds on a 60 second course compared to the "extreme performance Summer" tires (RS-3, AD08,StartSpec, RE-11)

A6 is top of the heap.. and running it 245 square works VERY well :)

Are you new at all this? Run the NT01's for a year before jumping to the go fast stuff!!

+1 :)
One big spin in a parking lot AX on A6s and they will be flat spotted and useless. Throwing a $1400 set of fresh, flat spotted tires in the dumpster stings a bit.

No love for V710s?

Brad Roberts 02-10-2012 11:52 AM

I like the V710's.. they typically *only* win a handful of classes at the SCCA National's whereas the A6 cleans up (they do have some off years)

DOT R:

1.A6
2.710

Better?

Haha I have raced other cars on R-Compounds and have raced with but V710's and A6's... lol

Umm... So what about running 245's all the way around and adding a huge front swaybar to eat up the ammense oversteer?? Eh?

Brad Roberts 02-20-2012 10:36 AM

Been running cars here in SoCal 275 square with GT3 front bar and stock rear bar on stock PSS9's.

Also have ran R6 Hoosiers 245 square on 17's with GT3 front bar and Tarett 4way rear bar. It works well.

Few weeks back I tested 225 R6 square on a BoxsterS race car at AutoX. This place (Qualcomm) eats up A6's (the tires overheat with their 1.5 mile **AutoX's**) so I wanted to test a smaller R6. It worked great :) Instead of the A6 being heated up within a few corners, the R6 took a full lap+. This meant the tire was good to go for the way they run their timed runs (no cool down time)

Every question about suspension and tires is dependent on the driver and the conditions. 99% of this world find a compromise that works for them (It may also work for other people) but you need to find what works for YOU in your situation.

245 is awfully skinny for AX. I'd run 275 square. However my favorite setup on Boxster was 315/30/18 and 295/30/18 a6s. :D

If you're not ready for DOT R tires Hankook RS3 is awesome ax street tire and they make some good sizes for Boxster with 17s too. NT01 is nice treaded DOT r tire that will be much more forgiving to your wallet.

They are on sale at Performancetread.com now too.

Where do you plan to autocross? Do you run with RSCC ? Be carful about compounds you choose if your running at cold venues. road race compounds like Hoosier r6s need heat to work well in ax. I'd say two best dedicated autocross tires are the Good Year Eagle RS DOTR in AUtocross compound and the Hoosier A6 DOT R. In cold weather the good year actually works better!

The car in the post above me has GT3 front bar, Tarett long links, and Tarett rear bar.

KW shocks, Tarett monoball inner pivot's on stock GT3 control arms.

Tarett rear toe links (monoball inner only)

It performed VERY well at the SCCA Nationals :) **She** took second behind a SoCal BMW, I believe he took 3rd behind the same BMW in the men's class and something else.

Grant will have to confirm. I was standing there.. but I have slept since then :)

Think about this ....the boxster had stock 2.5 internal motor against the the national winning BMW and 240z with fully built race motors. The Boxster was driven by two guys with little seat time in the car. I hadn't driven it for 8 months and jumped in new tire setup.

Fast driver in Boxster beat both Larson BMW and the 6 time national winning Thomas 240 z on more technical course which was very impressive! We actually had Thomas until his last run on day two. Stock powered Boxster couldn't hang with them on more power focused east course the day before. So it has beat the Larson car in a one day event.

Car was third in nationals in FP with time very competitve to winning BMW. With a built 2.7 the car will be a winner in FP class.

Just think what it would do with set of good JRZ shocks, full monoballs, and a 2.7 built to class specs.

Brad Roberts 02-20-2012 06:17 PM

I know what it will do :) I have the 2.7 on the stand right now :)

Dude if I had the car right now I'd be in So Cal working with you to get that motor in the car. I'm busy now putting supercharger in the Z.

ChrisZang 02-23-2012 07:19 AM

Hi Grant,

did you ever end up selling Frankenboxster?
